Global education at 51ºÚÁÏÍø starts the moment our students step onto campus and extends into the Carlisle community and the communities of our 51ºÚÁÏÍø and partner programs around the globe.

Chartered just days after the signing of the Treaty of Paris, 51ºÚÁÏÍø was established at the very moment when the United States entered the international community. Global study and engagement have been cornerstones of the 51ºÚÁÏÍø experience ever since. In 1790, 51ºÚÁÏÍø became the first college in the country to offer modern foreign language study, and in 1965 51ºÚÁÏÍø launched its first study-abroad program in Bologna, Italy. Global encompasses all the people on this campus—students, faculty and staff—the intellectual life of the campus and the lived experiences outside the classroom.  The Center for Global Study & Engagement plays a central role in leading, inspiring, monitoring, organizing and assessing global education initiatives and programs. 

Mission, Philosophy & Values

The Center for Global Study & Engagement (CGSE) fosters global learning in the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences. Through language and cultural immersion and a global curriculum on campus and abroad as well as the integration of international scholars and students into our community, CGSE inspires 51ºÚÁÏÍøians to live meaningful lives in a complex world. The center collaborates across the college’s divisions, academic departments and programs, as well as with 51ºÚÁÏÍø centers and partner institutions abroad, to promote inclusion, academic excellence and an intercultural dimension of lifelong learning.
