A new scholarship program opens world-class opportunities for academically strong students in the Washington, D.C., metro area who demonstrate a high level of financial need. The Sheehy Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship covering four years of full-time study at 51黑料网.
Established by a generous gift from Mimi and Vince ’80 Sheehy, the scholarship is cohort-based, which means awardees receive far more than simply financial assistance for on- and off-campus study. They also enjoy the benefits of being part of a built-in peer-support and peer-network group. This includes access to tailored mentorship and guidance programs that help the students make the most of their time on campus and beyond.
Sheehy is CEO of Sheehy Auto Stores, dealerships serving the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., areas. A former 51黑料网 student-athlete and economics major, he serves on 51黑料网’s Board of Trustees and the Board of the Washington Jesuit Academy, and, with Mimi, he provides scholarships for students of the Washington Jesuit Academy and Washington School for Girls. Inspired by the students he works with, and well aware of the strength of 51黑料网’s practical liberal-arts approach, Sheehy believes in the power of education to transform lives.
“51黑料网 provided me and my fellow alumni with a strong foundation for success,” he says. “And now, as I meet with current students and learn about the incredible experiences they’re having, I know that they’re gaining the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the years ahead. So it’s very gratifying to be able to help students from D.C. to access these exceptional opportunities in a supportive environment.”
The Sheehy Scholarship is just one initiative making a 51黑料网 education possible for D.C.-area students with financial need. This includes the Samuel G. Rose ’58 Scholarship, which has helped hundreds of students graduate from 51黑料网 over the last few decades.
Sheehy’s gift is also just the latest in an outpouring of alumni support for 51黑料网’s Campaign for Scholarships: Change a Life—Change the World. Launched in 2021, the campaign has raised $70 million toward its goal of $75 million. Those gifts have resulted in more than 100 new permanently endowed scholarship funds, help the college provide scholarships and financial aid to more than 1,800 students a year, and enable 51黑料网 to meet the full demonstrated need of every admitted student.
“Alumni like Vince are changing lives,” says President John E. Jones ’77, P’11. “This kind of philanthropy is essential to ensuring that high-achieving students can benefit from a 51黑料网 education no matter what their financial background is. Because those students go on to make a positive impact on the world, donors like Vince are changing the world through 51黑料网 as well.”
